Advocacy and Campaigns

Members of the IANSA Women’s Network work are actively engaged in disarmament initiatives; ending gun violence in the home; awareness-raising about the problems of small arms availability and misuse; monitoring and evaluation of weapons disposal programmes, and in formulating long-term strategies to combat the global gun crisis.

The August 2010 issue of Reaching Critical Will News includes information about follow up from the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) that took place between 12–23 July 2010.

This is a call for action on this year’s International Day of Peace on 21 September, an opportunity to reflect on our work to end gun violence and consider ways to peacefully resolve differences.

We are delighted that IANSA is a co-convenor of this year’s Women PeaceMakers working conference “Precarious Progress: UN Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security” hosted by the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice (IPJ) at the University of San Diego, San Diego, California, USA from 29 September to 1 October 2010.

IANSA women followed discussions at the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) Preparatory Committee and monitored for the inclusion of references of gender and/or issues of specific relevance to our work as IANSA women.

During this year’s Global Week of Action against Gun Violence, IANSA women in Cameroon, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda held 1 day women-only trainings on gender and an ATT using training materials developed by IANSA and SweFOR.

From 12-23 July 2010 UN member states will gather in New York for preparatory committee (PrepCom) meetings on an Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).

Members of the IANSA Women’s Network attending the Biennial Meeting of States on Small Arms (BMS) issued a statement urging States to take a systematic gender-inclusive approach in the implementation of the UN Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons In All Its Aspects (PoA).
