IANSA publications

Since 1998 a wide range of publications and resource materials have been produced by the IANSA Network. Production has been possible with donations and grants and all publications are produced on a non-profit basis by a small staff, including interns and volunteers who have assisted with translations and at various other levels within the production process.

DCAF Policy Paper: Poster Boys No More: Gender and Security Sector Reform in Timor-Leste 11 February 2010
Henri Myrttinen breaks new ground in examining the gender dimensions of the DDR and SSR processes in Timor-Leste, with a focus on the establishment of the police and armed forces. The paper explores issues such as: how men’s roles relate to gang violence and relationships of patronage that undermine the security services, how women have been incorporated into the new security services and how the security services are addressing gender-based violence.

Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict: Global Overview and Implications for the Security Sector 31 October 2007
This report demonstrates the horrifying scope and magnitude of sexual violence in armed conflict. The first part of the report, the Global Overview, profiles documented conflict-related sexual violence in 50 countries - in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and the Middle East - that have experienced armed conflict over the past twenty years. Each profile contains a short summary of the conflict, a description of forms of sexual violence that occurred and, where available, quantitative data on sexual violence. The second part of the report, entitled Implications for the Security Sector, explores strategies for security and justice actors to prevent and respond to sexual violence in armed conflict and post-conflict situations. It focuses in particular on peacekeepers; police; the justice sector, including transitional justice; civil society initiatives; and how DDR programmes can address sexual violence.

The Impact of Guns on Women’s Lives 31 May 2005
This report looks at the impact on women of guns in the home, in communities and during and after conflict. In each of these contexts, it looks at violence committed with guns against women, the role women play in gun use, and the campaigns women are spearheading against gun violence.

This paper is an adaptation of material presented by Dr. Carol Cohn and Felicity Hill to the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission on 12 June 2005, incorporating ideas and comments raised during the session.
Gender Awareness in Research on Small Arms and Light Weapons: A Preliminary Report 31 December 2004
This report discusses how gender ideologies might influence people’s attitudes to small arms. It argues that gender shapes and constrains the behavior and attitudes of women and men, including creating differences in their approaches to and use of small arms.

Demobilization and Reintegration Programs: Addressing Gender Issues 31 May 2003
This study focuses on selected gender issues using data from pilot projects in several countries including Eritrea and Guinea-Bissau. It makes recommendations to ensure that female specific needs are identified and addressed, and proposes strategies that minimise gender discrimination.
