IANSA publications

Since 1998 a wide range of publications and resource materials have been produced by the IANSA Network. Production has been possible with donations and grants and all publications are produced on a non-profit basis by a small staff, including interns and volunteers who have assisted with translations and at various other levels within the production process.

Women, Gender and Gun Violence in the Middle East 20 October 2011
This report presents the main findings of an assessment conducted in Lebanon, Jordan and Occupied Palestinian Territory from January to May 2011 by providing a situation overview, challenges and recommendations for future interventions. The proliferation of small arms has prevented women from exercising some of their most basic rights. Impacts include armed domestic violence and “crimes committed in the name of honour”, as well as long term social, economic and psychological effects of revenge killings between male family members, tribal vendettas and celebratory shootings resulting in death and serious injury.
Global Burden of Armed Violence Report 20 October 2011
This Report confirms what IANSA women have known for many years, “The proportion of homicides related to intimate partners or the family represents a significant proportion of homicides in some countries in Europe and Asia.” Chapter 4 focuses on ‘When the Victim is a Woman’ and seeks to disaggregate the demographics of armed violence and capture the ways in which women of different ages are at risk. It also considers the particular settings and risks shaping femicide and sexual violence.
UNODC report: Global Study on Homicide 11 October 2011
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has released its first “Global Study on Homicide”, which shows that young men, particularly in Central and South America, the Caribbean and Central and Southern Africa, are at greatest risk of falling victim to intentional homicide. Firearms are behind rising murder rates in those regions, where almost three quarters of all homicides are committed with guns, compared to 21% in Europe. The report also shows that women are at greatest risk of murder due to domestic violence. This confirms IANSA's position as part of the Disarm Domestic Violence campaign which highlights how the greatest risk of gun violence to women around the world is not on the streets, or the battlefield, but in their own homes.
Disarm Domestic Violence - Conference report: WILPF Sweden 07 July 2011
The report contains highlights from the conference and explores the relationship between small arms and light weapons and violence against women. The conference was held on 31 March 2011 organised by the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) in cooperation with the IANSA Women's Network, and the Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons, along with IANSA members Amnesty International and the Swedish Fellowship of Reconciliation.
Voices of survivors: the different faces of gun violence 12 May 2011
This publication features 16 testimonies acquired by IANSA of women survivors of gun violence from a number of different countries. The violence occurs in various contexts and situations but the one common denominator in all of these stories is the misuse of guns. The choice of the countries featured is based on responses from IANSA women, and it is striking to see the similarities that exist even though the countries in which the armed violence occurs may be ‘worlds apart’.

When Men Murder Women: An Analysis of 2008 Homicide Data 16 September 2010
In the USA, black females murdered by men are most often killed with a gun, almost always by someone they know according to the new Violence Policy Center (VPC) report. ‘When Men Murder Women: An Analysis of 2008 Homicide Data’ details national and state-by-state information from the USA on female homicides involving one female murder victim and one male offender. Firearms - especially handguns - were the most common weapon used. “These findings alarmingly demonstrate how domestic violence can escalate to homicide. More resources need to be made available to protect women and prevent such tragedies" said Kristen Rand, VPC Legislative Director.
When Men Murder Women: An Analysis of 2006 Homicide Data 31 July 2008
An annual report prepared by the Violence Policy Center detailing the reality of homicides committed against women. The study analyzes the most recent Supplementary Homicide Report (SHR) data submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This is the first analysis of the 2006 data on female homicide victims to offer breakdowns of cases in the 10 states with the highest female victim/male offender homicide rates, and the first to rank the states by the rate of female homicides.
