A client definitely feels totally in fear of her life when a gun is held at her head… they can’t physically respond... Defence mechanisms are different with a knife… they will fight back.
Daily gun news, small arms policy and firearm violence prevention news.
We are pleased to announce that the date for this year’s Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence is 16–22 June 2014. This week has been chosen to coincide with the next meeting in the UN small arms process, the Fifth Biennial Meeting of States (BMS5).
Traditionally, the Week of Action (WoA) is a time to highlight the international campaign to stop the proliferation and misuse of small arms and light weapons. Over the years, participation during the Week of Action Against Gun Violence has grown, with IANSA members in over 100 countries participating. Activities have ranged from signature/petition collections, lobbying officials, using sports stars or public figures to promote Gun-Free campaigns and promoting the Disarm Domestic Violence campaign.
IANSA will not be able to provide funding for GWA activities this year but we trust that even without funding support, we can all lend a hand in highlighting the destructive impacts of gun violence and the need to craft and implement policies to curb this problem. ‘Local action for global effect’ means that the small actions we take at community level combine together to become a global campaign. Let us therefore seize the opportunity!!
Over the past three years the campaign for an Arms Treaty has required a great deal of our energy and attention, with great success: the ATT is well on its way to entry into force. The ATT will regulate international arms transfers, but to reduce the daily toll of death and injury within countries we need strong national policies and programs to reduce the proliferation and misuse of guns. Therefore the suggested theme for the Global Week of Action 2014 is:
STOP GUN VIOLENCE AND SAVE LIVES
The gender dimension and survivor participation are cross cutting issues that should be highlighted in WoA activities.
Since government delegations from all countries will be in New York for the BMS, here’s one simple action to raise awareness: Persuade your government representatives to mention the Global Week of Action – and the important work of civil society to reduce gun violence – in their official remarks at the BMS.
